Safety on the road

Regular bicycle servicing is not a matter of course for most cyclists. “However, as with cars, the benefits of regular bicycle servicing should not be underestimated,” says Tilo Eilers Name, bicycle expert at DEKRA. Autumn is a good time for servicing in many cases.

“The technology of modern bicycles is becoming increasingly sophisticated and complex. Even simple adjustments can be beyond those without dedicated expertise. This applies even more to repairs and the replacement of components”, emphasizes Eilers.
“Servicing and repairing high-quality e-bikes, racing bikes or gravel bikes requires a great deal of specialist knowledge and the right tools. In particular, work on safety-related components such as brakes, handlebars or gears should be left to experts. Anything else can compromise safety and even drive up costs”, says the expert.

Fall service for a safe winter season

The general trend towards more bicycle use also means that more and more cyclists regularly get on their bikes even in winter. After the usually intensive use of two-wheelers in the summer season, a bicycle service in the fall is recommended for weatherproof winter cyclists, to make the bike fit for the use on dark, slippery paths in the cold months.
An inspection in the fall can also be an option for those who give their bike a winter break. This helps to prevent rust from spreading during the winter. You can set off on the first warm days with a perfectly prepared bike and avoid having to queue at the bike shop in the spring. Incidentally, a bike service in the spring is also a good idea. “The crucial point is carrying out the service regularly, once a year,” emphasizes Eilers.

Electric assistance: higher wear due to higher load

For pedelecs and e-bikes, the annual workshop stop is doubly important. Higher power and greater weight mean more stress and wear, for example on the brakes, sprocket, chain or toothed belt, and tires. For winter use, in addition to a functional, bright lighting system, particular attention must be paid to ensuring that the tires have sufficient grip so as not to lose control on wet surfaces.

More light for “bio bikes”

When it comes to “bio bikes”, which are moved exclusively by muscle power, special attention should be paid to functioning brakes, a tire tread with good grip and good lighting. Many older models produce only very weak light, which is often difficult to see next to modern car headlights and other light effects. Retrofitting with modern LED lights ensures better visibility and greater range of vision.
The trend towards environmentally friendly transportation is also being supported by a growing number of bicycle leasing schemes. Many companies support their employees by offering a salary sacrifice model. Such offers usually include comprehensive accident and theft insurance, along with a mobility guarantee. From the perspective of DEKRA’s bicycle experts, it makes sense to supplement the package with an annual inspection, which is usually possible at a low monthly extra cost.
